“Adele from Munkatch” – “The best bread in Berlin”

JUNE/2016

Adele from Munkatch and The best bread in Berlin have a particular compositional structure. This is because there is an idea (a melody) that never ceases, even with persistent variations (evolutions).

This idea attempts to reinforce the value of memory which, as well as signifying “pass through the heart again” (remember, from the latin: re; cordare), strives to be an effective tool to prevent certain atrocities in the future.

Some historians agree that there was a secret meeting where Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler discussed the political convenience of executing the Final Solution. Goebbels, who was a communication fanatic and was very aware of the impact this could have on the future electoral support, told Hitler that massive extermination would have great negative impact on future voters, and therefore advised against it. He then explained that the National Socialist Party (his party) was growing very slowly in elections and implementing such an unpopular measure would make them lose valuable voters.

Confronted by the Minister of Propaganda’s concern, Hitler responded:

“Nobody complained, and nobody even remembers the Armenian Genocide...; nobody will be bothered by this plan.”

Which could have been the impact of a generalized Turkish objection to the Armenian Genocide? What effect could a firm and constant memory of the Armenian people have had on Nazi propagandistic calculations? And what about the disapproval of neighboring countries... or of the whole world?

We will never know the potential impact this memory could have had on the macabre, yet rational and rigorous calculations made by Hitler in deciding whether or not to systematically kill the Jews in Germany.1

We will never know... but we can learn something from this story: the value of memory.

The same as the central melody of Adele from Munkatch and The best bread in Berlin, which changes constantly, but is never fully extinguished.

This is why, if this meeting really occurred, Hitler was really evaluating pros and cons of this procedure, and the perceived effect of a similarly unpopular process (the Armenian Genocide), would have been a central issue in the final decision.

1It is important to note that the Final Solution was not one of the first options that Hitler was evaluating to deal with the “Jewish Problem” (sic). In fact, the first plan he analyzed (and even started implementing) was to send the European Jews to Madagascar for them to form a self-governed settlement there.

As citizens, we tend to underestimate the potential effects of our opinions.]

Rosenstrasse

--- “Devuélvannos a nuestros maridos!”

The geometric secret of Stradivarius

By Professor Bruno Barosi
Director of the acoustical physics laboratory,
Cremona Institute qf Violin Building

The violin-as well as the viola, the violoncello-is an EIR September 29, 1989 instrument which is extremely contradictory from a physical standpoint. It is a machine which plays two opposite roles at the same time. The first is a static role: The lightweight structure (it weighs 220-225 grams) must hold a tension, a force, in order for the strings to sound, of about 21-22 kilograms, which then presses on the bridge, and hence on the curvature of the soundboard, which at the center, at its greatest thickness, is 3 millimeters of wood, at around 8 kilograms. At the same time, it must be capable of moving, oscillating around a position of equilibrium, and hence of vibrating, maintaining a constant static equilibrium. Such structures in physics are exceptional. The exceptionality is given by the fact that the violin, like most instruments, was born as an imitation of the human voice (people say the violin has a human sound, which is emotionally moving) and not vice versa. So there is an adaptation, and the secret is that this "box" (which you have probably heard called a resonating box, but this is incorrect), is a coupler between the strings (which are the sound source) and the air of the environment surrounding the instruments, which is the "charge" or utilizer. It's a very simple comparison: From a cybernetic viewpoint, the violin is a "nonstable multivibrator" and is comparable to an electrical transformer, which everyone is acquainted with. The "primary" is the strings, the "secondary" is the surrounding air, and the coupler, the magnetic core, is the box itself. The discovery of this optimal coefficient of coupling lies in having correlated the internal volume to the external surface. When one talks of raising the frequency (all the instruments of the old Cremonese school having been "tortured," insofar as not one of them still has its original fingerboard), the desire to make them play at a higher frequency involves an adaptation of the system, which cannot help but intervene on fundamental parts of the system.

Me pareció algo fascinante.

The Wall That We Observe

Once upon a time, there was a Wall that prevented people from escaping; people who would later be killed because of their origin.

Today, there is a Wall that prevents people who look for a better future from getting in, just because of their origin.

There is always a Wall.

And... by chance... we fall on the side of the ones who want to get in, or the ones who try to get out.

All that matters is to see the Wall... and to carefully consider what we will do about those who are on the other side.

“Quema de libros Judíos”

JUNIO/2016

PADRE: Por miedo.

NIÑA: ¿Pero miedo a qué, Papá…?

PADRE: A quedar afuera.

NIÑA: ¿Afuera de qué?

PADRE: De la Sociedad.

NIÑA: ¿Má… que hacen esas personas?

MADRE: Ehhh… tiran palomas al aire.

NIÑA: ¿Para qué?

MADRE: Para no quedar afuera.

NIÑA: ¿Afuera de qué?

MADRE: Del miedo.

NIÑA: ¿El miedo a qué?
